Healthcare Assistant

The role of the Healthcare Assistant (HCA) is to support the delivery of patient care under the supervision and direction of qualified nursing personnel. The HCA collaborates with nursing staff and all ward members to create an efficient, safe, and friendly environment for care delivery. Responsibilities - Provide a professional and caring service for all patients while in the care of Kanad Hospital. - Ensure that health and safety guidelines are followed according to current policies and procedures. - Assist the Registered Nurse with the provision of quality nursing service, adopting the philosophy of care within the service area. - Assist with duties associated with the delivery of care and management of the unit environment, including other support duties as appropriate. - Report any incident or potential incident that may compromise the health and safety of residents, staff, or visitors and take appropriate action. - Carry out assigned and delegated tasks involving direct care and all activities of daily living under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, such as assisting patients with personal hygiene, laundry, dietary intake, and physical and mental health. - Promote positive mental, physical, and nutritional health with patients. - Demonstrate knowledge of the hospital’s physical layout. - Communicate professionally with patients, visitors, and all Kanad Hospital staff. - Greets and receives patients with a smile and a servant’s attitude. - Check and order supplies, maintain stock levels of non‑medicine items in patient and non‑patient areas, and assist nursing staff with checking unit stock levels of disposables. - Answer call bells promptly and assist residents or inform nursing personnel as necessary. - Ensure call bells are in working order and within reach of the patient/resident. - Answer and channel telephone calls and relay messages to staff. - Direct visitors appropriately. - Correctly assemble and maintain patient charts from admission to discharge, including filing documents. - Ensure the uniform is worn in accordance with the organization’s work‑wear policy; dress professionally and act in a professional manner. - Follow up on all assigned tasks and provide timely feedback to the immediate supervisor. - Clean, organize, and keep the unit in order. - Clean and assemble equipment as required (e.g., trolleys, drip stands, commodes). - Ensure the sluice room is kept clean and tidy and that daily checklists are signed. - Make occupied and unoccupied beds. - Get equipment and materials needed by midwifery, nursing, and medical staff. - Assist with the orientation of new staff. Qualifications - Experience answering the phone, meeting the public, and using a computer. - Strong interpersonal skills for effective and tactful communication with patients, staff, and physicians, both in person and on the telephone. - Motivated, able to work under minimal supervision, and have excellent customer service skills. - Organizational ability to maintain records, files, schedules, etc., while handling frequent interruptions and telephone calls.
